Story:
JIM: The problem with positive thinking is that it’s all about thinking. It doesn’t account for the power of unconscious beliefs. When I understood that I was freed from the tedious and fruitless process of trying to convert my every negative though into a positive one — and instead, valuing the negative thoughts as traces I could follow to deeply held beliefs about being alive. It was then I discovered the path to emotional freedom.
JUDITH: All of my efforts to use positive thinking, affirmations, and acting “as if” never got me
anywhere except to feel even more discouraged and hopeless. But when I realized that my negative thinking was a blueprint of my early environment — the script of my parents’ frustration and dissatisfaction with life — I understood that my feelings of hopelessness were the expression of my allegiance to them and that old pattern. It was then that the gates of my future opened allowing me to become exactly what I could I see myself being.
